Dealing in fast, streamlined punk rock with ringing guitars, simple but effective melodic hooks, and a double dose of energy, Radioactivity were formed in 2013 by Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan, who had previously worked together in the well-respected garage punk band the Marked Men. Radioactivity began as a spinoff of the Novice, a band Burke worked with from 2010 to 2012 while he was living in Japan. When Burke returned to the United States and settled in Denton, Texas, he didn't want to let the songs he wrote for the Novice go to waste, so he reworked them and assembled a new band as a platform for the material. With Burke on guitar and vocals, Ryan on bass and vocals, Daniel Fried on guitar, and Gregory Rutherford on drums, Burke named the new band Radioactivity, and they cut a self-titled debut for Dirtnap Records that was released in October 2013. The group supported the album with live work, though they emphasized that they wanted to be known as a good band rather than a good local band, and aimed for quality over quantity when booking shows. Radioactivity's second album, Silent Kill, was released by Dirtnap on June 30, 2015. Bassist Orville Neeley replaced Ryan in 2016.

Conan’s doom is singular. Carved of granite. Yes, of course there’ve been changes sinceguitarist/vocalist Jon Davis founded the group in 2006, but the intention at the time toward superlativeheavy–tonal extremity wrought with impressionist lyrics stripping ideas to the core where sometimes the whole line is just one word; they’ve always called it “Caveman Battle Doom”–remains at the root of everything they’ve done since. And across five studio records in the decade from 2012-2022, Conan have set the standard by which much of “heavy” anything is judged. And in comparison, most is found wanting.

But for every time you’ve heard about Conan’s music being like galloping steeds or frost-covered sharp-peaked mountains, etc., imagery of largesse and violence, the truth is Conan are an exercise infrequency. It’s the low resonance that shakes your chest, the depth of the bass–now handled by David Ryley (ex-Fudge Tunnel)–the push of air from Johnny King’s kick drum, or the way the dark-fuzz distortion of Davis’ guitar is offset by shouting vocals cutting through that sometimes punishing onslaught, rarely to offer comfort so much as add viciousness to the crash, plod and pillage.

In 2024, Conan sign to Heavy Psych Sounds as a recognized name and one of the foremost acts of their generation, wildly influential in their home country of the UK and well beyond; headliners in practice and theory alike. Their fifth LP, 2022’s ‘Evidence of Immortality,’ brought a dark ambience to coincide with its outright attack. With experiments in darkwave and synth adding breadth to the stated root purpose of aural force, it’s never been harder to guess where the next few years might take their sound, but whatever’s coming, Conan will make it kill. The better part of two decades later, their reliability remains unshakable. Which you want when your band is so heavy that the floor and your ribcage both start to vibrate.

They spent the next five years touring the globe extensively before signing with Berlin experimental label PAN in 2019 and releasing their debut LP ‘Movimiento Para Cambio’. A record which Mixmag included in their ‘Best Albums of the Decade’ list, Resident Advisor named it ‘One of the Best Records of 2019’ while DJ Mag asserted “they are a vital and contemporary addition to dance music’s punk cannon”. The LP was featured twice on the godfather of punk Iggy Pop’s BBC6 radio show who personally told his listeners “They always wake me up. I like this.” Their collaboration is a blend of urgent Spanish language vocals centered around themes of power, control, social justice with hardware samplers, synths, and drum machines. The unique sound has led them to perform in many different contexts, whether it be entire tours opening for more traditional punk acts like Iceage and Shame, to the exact opposite, performing live during peak times at techno clubs such as Berghain. In 2024, Pelada set out on the final chapter of their project supporting their latest album "Ahora Has Qué Nunca" which has notable guest appearances, including Zambian-Canadian rapper and 2020 Polaris Prizewinner Backxwash and trumpet player Aquiles Navarro (of Irreversible Entanglements, Impulse! The Mall is music for punks who dance. In the suburban wasteland of middle America, malls exist as decaying artifacts of conspicuous consumption–forgotten tombs haunted by the ghosts of capitalism’s failures. Using sequencers and analog synths, the Mall’s Mark Plant raises the dead to get glamorous amidst decay. Fusing the shimmering, plastic qualities of 80s dance electronica with the punishing, visceral energy of mid-Western hardcore, the Mall soundtracks the liminal space between beauty and anger, celebration and cynicism, resilience and destruction. Performances are as ephemeral as kisses in a movie theatre in 1987–and more lethal than radiation fallout from a space probe. The music of MVTANT, the solo dark electronic project of Joseph Anger, carries the listener through the collage-like use of future primitive lo-fi samples, punishing bass lines, washes of nauseating synthesizers, all woven together into constantly shapeshifting song structures. Drawing heavily from body horror cinema and ero guro graphic novels, MVTANT has crafted a world that is uniquely grotesque and otherworldly, that walks the line between dreamlike fantasies and waking nightmares.

After reissuing his first two EP’s Gore+Mirrorshade on vinyl in 2021 followed by a companion collection of remixes, Low Culture+Metal Bodies, in 2023, he has returned in 2024 with Electronic Body Horror, a full length album of songs that started as demos during the 2020 lockdown. Each song represents a different near death hallucination, and the album asks how much we store sensation, emotion, and memory in our flesh, and how much of that would be carried over if our body parts were transplanted into another person. Would they absorb the donors memories? Would the donor too have access to the recipients memories? And If we die, what do we take with us and what do we leave behind?

Founded in 2009 by Trez (vocals, guitar) and Stef (drums), Mares released their debut The Moulting in 2010, where it topped national campus radio charts and was hailed by PopMatters as “superb”; they signed to Canada’s venerable Sonic Unyon Records shortly thereafter. 2012’s The Pilgrimage was produced by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Yob, Pelican) and praised by Pitchfork, Decibel, and Terrorizer, as well as receiving a nod from Canada’s prestigious Polaris Prize. After several North American tours, a hiatus followed; they re-emerged in 2022 with Trez remaining at the helm, and long-standing Mares friend and collaborator Casey on drums, bass, and electronics. 2022’s The Exile was deemed by many reviewers as their finest work to date; Decibel praised its “nuance, vulnerability, and maturity”, and AngryMetalGuy called it “the sound of a band in its prime, not one just slinking back in from the cold”. Baby Jey are the soundtrack to expansive landscapes that evoke warm melodies and cold memories. The band writes strangely familiar melodies that end up more strange than familiar. On their latest album, Crop Circles, Baby Jey take a darker approach to their infectious pop melodies that feel as if they were born out of the middle of a deserted plain. The album is interspersed with old radio interludes from when Alberta farmers began finding crop circles in their fields in the 1980s. And yet, the band's fascination with "crop circles" moves beyond their prairie context, floating above the stratosphere, reaching for the ones who formed crop circles in the first place--with an impressive arsenal of spacey synths and cosmic samples. Most recently, Baby Jey promoted Crop Circles on a Western Canadian tour with the album hitting #1 on the CKUA Top 30 and #11 on Canada's nation-wide college radio chart.

Deciding to pursue music more seriously, the young artist moved to Vancouver, BC and enrolled in a music production program at a local college. After playing in multiple bands with limited success, he decided to begin a new solo project. Void Comp began in 2021 with the release of the debut single “Come My Way” quickly followed by the EP “Last Days”. His most recent EP “Metropol” released July 26th, featuring the single “High Relief”. Julé now resides in Edmonton, AB.

Wants is the brainchild of Jeebs Nabil – a Malaysian born veteran Calgary musician and one of the founding members of retro synth-pop trio Melted Mirror. Initially a growing collection of demos, this synth-pop project took shape over the pandemic in the wake of Melted Mirror’s disbandment.Previously known for accompanying goth-electro music with delay and chorus laden post-punk guitar lines, Wants sees Jeebs stepping into the role of producer and vocalist on a debut self-titled EP that offers propulsive and sample-driven synth-pop tracks that skirt the line between Synthwave, Darkwave, and even a hint of Techno.

Enlisting help from veteran Calgary musicians Cian Haley and Tom White, Wants delivers a live sound that couples the raw human energy of a band with the moody precision of sequenced 80’s synths and sampled drums. If you’re a fan of dark radioactive synth-pop and neon fallout, Wants is worth a look.

Blue Youth are a noise punk band from Regina, Saskatchewan, that came together in Fall 2016 to form a sound consisting of dynamic vocals, sharp, intricate guitar lines, fuzzed out bass riffs, and pounding, yet precisely placed percussion. Fast and powerful instrumentation, coupled with vocal stylings that are as pop-tinged as they are desperate, this prairie noise band pulls no punches.

Blue Youth has reunited in 2023, after a four year hiatus, and will be releasing their new LP “DEFEATIST” in Summer 2024 thru Grind Central Records and Zegema Beach Records.

Patrick Froese is a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Edmonton, Alberta, who grew up on a family farm in the vast Canadian prairies.

Since 2019, Patrick has been working on his project -- Chic Chameleon. Drawing on his life experiences on the prairie farm, the Chic Chameleon project has helped to express Patrick’s musical and melancholic consciousness. Specifically, Patrick draws melodic inspiration from both Dream-pop and Shoegaze genres; he uses lush reverbs, mirrored delays, and syrupy chorus tones to shade his aural textures.

Currently, Patrick is in the midst of releasing a debut, full length album and gearing up for an album tour in September, 2024. The third single for the album, “Shade Your Way” was released July 19, 2024.

Sultry summer nights, cruising on a hot dog date, semi-professional wrestling, and open liquor in your jacket - all the sounds of Sister Suzie, Edmonton’s junkshop sweethearts. Driving from stomping glam, biting punk rock n’ roll, and pub rock hooks, the Suze’s duelling switchblade guitars layer with Andrea’s vocals for 70’s inspired sugary-tough tunes…like the soundtrack to the getaway from a candy store smash-and-grab.
